Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®), developed by Dr. David Berceli, is a body-based modality that uses a series of gentle stretches to activate the body’s natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating. This involuntary trembling discharges deep muscular patterns of stress and tension, restoring calm and resilience.

The Science and Origin
Dr. Berceli developed TRE after observing populations in war-torn areas instinctively curling into fetal positions and trembling during explosions. He theorized that trembling is an innate, evolutionary survival mechanism designed to release pent-up fight-or-flight energy.
The Mechanism: TRE bypasses the conscious brain and ego to engage the subcortical brain and psoas muscles. The resulting neurogenic tremors act as an internal release of deeply held physical and emotional trauma.
How the Practice Works: The practice typically consists of a sequence of 7 key exercises that gently fatigue and stretch major muscle groups (such as the calves, thighs, and hips) to trigger the body’s natural trembling response.
Stretching: A sequence of mild stretches that gently pre-fatigue the legs and core muscles.
Tremoring: The individual lies on the floor, relaxing into positions that prompt the legs and core to begin a natural, involuntary rhythmic tremor.
Regulation: The tremoring moves organically through various muscle and fascia patterns across the body. Individuals maintain conscious control, allowing them to pause or slow down the tremoring to remain comfortable.
