Definitions:
Compassion fatigue is the physical, emotional, and psychological exhaustion that comes
from caring for others who are suffering or in distress.
• Key Point: It is often described as the “cost of caring.”
• Typical Signs: Feeling drained, less empathy, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or detachment from
those you’re helping.
• Who Experiences It: Common among caregivers, therapists, healthcare workers, and anyone in
helping professions.
Vicarious Trauma = internal worldview changes from repeated exposure to trauma.
• Definition: Vicarious trauma is a deep change in a caregiver’s inner experience that results from
repeated exposure to others’ traumatic stories or experiences.
• Key Point: It’s not just exhaustion — it actually shifts the caregiver’s worldview, beliefs, and sense of
safety.
• Typical Signs: Intrusive thoughts, changes in trust, safety, or control beliefs, feeling hopeless, or
hypervigilant.
• Who Experiences It: Professionals who work closely with trauma survivors (e.g., therapists, social
workers, first responders).
Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) = positive transformation after trauma recovery.
• Definition: Post-traumatic growth is the positive psychological change that can occur after struggling
with highly challenging life circumstances or trauma.
• Key Point: It’s not about the trauma itself being “good,” but about the growth that can emerge from
the recovery process.
• Typical Signs: Greater appreciation for life, stronger relationships, new possibilities, increased
personal strength, and spiritual development.
• Who Experiences It: Trauma survivors themselves, therapists may see clients reach this stage over
time.
